This weeks Top Ten Tuesday is a freebie, so I chose ten books I want to read again. happy Tuesday!(In random order) *** The Mercy Thompson series is one of my faves - it was the first urban fantasy book I read. I checked it out three times before actually reading it, I found the cover kinda racey and sadly I judged it. I know I am not suppose to do that - be we all do it right? How I found this book: I checked out some paranormal book and there was a library receipt tucked in the pages from the person that had the book before me. I looked it over and found the person had checked out many of my favorite reads and we had similar taste. This series was a current read for them so i decided to give it a shot. Ironically the receipt was the best list of book recommendations I ever got :-) *** Eternal Starling has all my favorite elements with a very normal and relateable female lead. If you havent' read it you should! Its a great book. *** I love anything to do with magic, so Hex Hall was fun, easy and entertaining read. Perfect introduction for a potential YA paranormal fan. *** Awesome series! *** Morganville is the series I keep crossing my fingers gets made into a TV show. *** This one seems a little out of place in my list of paranormal books, but is worth reading. If you feel a little down or need some inspiration for pursuing your dreams you should read this book. It would also make a great graduation gift and book to read with your kids. *** Kevin Hearne is a rock star. One of the reasons I adore this series is because its from a guys point of view written by a guy. His pithy comments, incredible diverse characters with ROTFLMBO dialogue made this series one of my favorites. It has a little of everything, magic, witches, shifters, vampires and even Gods. *** No brainer right? Harry Potter and The Hunger Games are two books I have read multiple times. They never get old. *** I am one book short - for the life of me I could not think of another book I want to read again. So I guess I need your help! Why haven't I read this sooner? Oh yeah, Richelle Mead, being one of my favorite authors, has an uncanny ability of ending a book with jaw dropping oh my heck she didn't just do that endings. In other words, I wanted to wait until I could read the whole series. I didn't want to spend eight months ticked off at one my favorite characters for stupid choices she makes while waiting for the next book to come out.....like Rose and Eugenie. Anyone who has read any of Richelle's work knows exactly what I am talking about. What about you? What is your favorite book that ends with a jaw dropping cliff hanger?

Friday the 13th: The Unluckiest Day of All? Friggatriskaidekaphobia or Paraskevidekatriaphobics. No matter what you call it (assuming you can pronounce either of these words because I sure can’t!), the irrational fear of Friday the 13th is no myth. Millions of people will change their behavior today due to superstition. There will be fewer air travelers, fewer road trips, and probably a few folks who called in sick to avoid tempting fate.
The good news? This infamous and fearsome day occurs three times this year which is the highest number possible. Oh, wait. That’s not good news? Only if you’re superstitious, which I’m not-- usually. I’ve always been told it’s a day of bad luck, but those superstitious warnings are rarely followed by an explanation so I decided to do some research. And guess what? Just like any urban legend there are numerous possible origins for the irrational fear of the 13th (most of them inconclusive since the fear of the 13th arose during the 19th century).
Still, some persist that there were earlier indications that the number 13 was unlucky. In Christianity, it’s believed there were 13 guests at the last supper which led to betrayal. Norse mythology has a similar tale where a 13th (and evil) Loki god crashed a dinner party leading to the death of a favored and benevolent god. Dig a little deeper and I’m sure we could find countless examples of misfortune and 13 throughout history.
Face it, we’re superstitious creatures by nature and quite a few of us believe the number 13 is inherently unlucky (or maybe even rooted in evil). As a result, the devil’s dozen is frequently omitted in everyday ventures.

Ever stayed on the 13th floor of a hotel? No? That’s because many buildings skip the 13th floor.

It’s bad luck to have a dinner party with 13 guests. Unless one of them has a death wish.

13th Street/Road/Avenue are typically skipped by city planners.

13 letters in your name? Better prepare for the devil’s luck… like Charles Manson.

As for me, I think I’ll being spending my Friday night curled up on the couch with a big bucket of popcorn and a scary movie or two. Now that seems fitting! The question is… what to watch?

My thoughts:

Holly Cupala writes an intensely emotional story about a young girl trying escape her very controlled world. She has overprotective parents and a boyfriend that suffocated me as I read it.

Sadly, I found Don't Breathe A Word unrelatable. Not because the writing wasn't good, because it was excellent. I just could not connect with Joy. She is my opposite in every way and I cannot imagine having anyone in my life that would harm me, further more I wouldn't allow it. Don't Breathe A Word caused me a wee bit of anxiety as I read it because I wanted to smack some sense into Joy AND her parents.

As I read Don't Breathe A Word my eyes were opened to a world that I would never have been able to imagine. I felt emotions that I would not normally feel and I am grateful for the opportunity to read this book because of this experience. For that reason I believe that Don't Breathe A Word has the potential to positively affect a YA fan that may be in similar situations by inspiring hope, forgiveness and self worth.

For these reasons I am giving Don't Breath A Word 3 Skullies - it's a well written story - just not for me.

My Life With(out) Books

Happy New Year! I hope that the holidays have been fabulous for you all. Its been a crazy whirlwind since a week before Thanksgiving at our house. I've beat myself up for being a naughty blogger and slacking with post. but honestly it has been rejuvenating. Often times I read criticisms about people that post personal info on their book blogs. Well this blog is called My LIFE With Books, so indulge me by letting me discuss life as I know it. (I'll just get it out of my system all at once! LOL) WHY I FELL OFF THE BLOG TRAIN:In November my husband had an earache that turned to complete hearing loss in his right ear. Turns out a tumor he had in his ear was infected and had to be removed. No worries - it was benign and his hearing was restored after the surgery. It was a stressful moment for us at a stressful time of year. Unfortunately when life happens the first thing to go in our busy schedule is the creative fun things we do. It makes me sad that My Life With Books suffered the most. I have felt lost not keeping up with every one's blogs as well as my own and have missed you all immensely. A UNIQUE TRADITION:Every year, if weather permits, we (My entire family) drive to the mountains and cut down our own Christmas tree. Eight years ago we decided to spend an extra five bucks for a tree tag and get a tree for a single new mom that worked for my sister. The following year we did it again, it wasn't a big deal for us to pick up an extra tree but it meant the world to this young woman that was living on a tight budget. The following year this single young mom found out she was pregnant again. She contacted my sister and ask if we wanted to adopt her baby. Now the tradition continues and we lovingly call it "Christmas Tree's for Birth Mom's". It has become one of our favorite things to do every year. Its amazing to me that we {people} will never know the impact one act of kindness can have on another human being. (Nor will we ever know how those small things will impact our own lives.) THE BIG DAY:Christmas was exciting - our family party was at my house this year so I cleaned like a crazed woman. No I cleaned like we were having another adoption home study! Even the ceilings got washed :-) Unfortunately the only thing I have to show for it (besides the gleaming house) is the extra five pounds I gained with all those delicious treats that were served. New Years has been pretty quiet at our house, just the way I like it. WHAT IS COMING UP:January will be a busy month here at My Life With Books - I have guest post, interviews, a giveaway hop and another giveaway (THE BIGGEST YET) scheduled this month. And yes, even those book reviews that were suppose to be posted last month will FINALLY be posted. THANK YOU!2011 has been an awesome blogging experience. I have made new friends, learned a great deal and read some rockin' books. So to all of you lovely followers, thank you for an amazing year in 2011 - it wouldn't be the same without you. You helped turned my little hobby into a very important and positive part of my life. I hope that 2012 is even better for all of us.

Fractured Light Blog Tour

My Thoughts:

Fractured Light tells a unique story about a young girl that is different than the rest of the world. Frustrated by living in a bubble Llona decides to step out of her comfort zone and try to live a normal teenage life. She makes friends, goes to social events and even develops a crush for the first time in her life.

All why trying to learn about her Aura powers and hide from the Vykens.

I enjoyed Fractured Light. The story is steady and consistent. It seemed a little slow at first but developed strong characters and plot that left me feeling invested in each one of them. I LOVED - LOVED- LOVED that this was a clean read AND a good story.

I would recommend Fractured Light for ages 13 and up. Most young women will be able to relate to Llona's journey in self discovery, confidence and self empowerment. Fractured Light is one book I will keep and read with my daughter as well as recommend to friends and family.

Can't make it to an author event at The Kings English Bookshop (TKE)? No worries, you can order an autographed copy from The Kings English Bookshop! I really like collecting autographed copies of my favorite books and don't have the time or means to travel the world and get my books signed. So I emailed the fab Rachel who organizes these author events to find out how you can order your own autographed copy and have it shipped to you from The Kings English Bookshop. Here is what Rachel said:.

"There are several ways to go about pre-orders/orders. First, if they want to pre-pay for the book with the intention of either picking it up at the front desk the evening of the event or sometime after, they can call the front desk (801) 484-9100 and pay over the phone, or they can e-mail me rachel at kingsenglish dot com. If they e-mail me they need to give their credit card info via e-mail or list a phone number for me to call them at.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon’s touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I’m getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

My thoughts:

Daemon and Katy’s relationship is white hot and explosive - lighting an infuriating passion that makes your pulse pound. Obsidian is far from predictable with its distinct characters, unique plot and thrilling action.

I really liked Katy – she is a book blogger too! I couldn’t help but smile every time she thought about her blog and the little thrill of excitement she got when making a post. I am sure she is going to have many fans and perhaps inspire future bloggers.

Katy has a strong personality that comes through the writing with such perfection I wonder if Jennifer Armentrout is channeling her inner teen. I could only wish I was as brave and bold as Katy is.

Daemon, ugh, where to start? One minute you want to kick him in the shin and the next throw yourself at him. Sometimes the two emotions are simultaneous leaving you to wonder if he really is a big butthead or a soft hearted sweetie. Through little unguarded glimpses of Daemon you get to see his tender side and honestly, you can’t help but like him, sometimes.

I liked the ending of Obsidian, it offers enough closure that you feel satisfied with the story and still asking questions about what will happen. There is still enough developed plot to carry the storyline into a strong second novel.
What I didn’t like: There was a lot of swearing. (Even for me, the closet potty mouth)

Would I buy this book? Absolutely! Obsidian will be in my top ten for this year. Jennifer Armentrout is proving to be one of my favorite authors. Sure hope she makes it out west for some book signings some day, I would love to meet her.

Would I recommend Obsidian to a teen? Yes. I loved Obsidian as an adult and know that it would be a favorite for the teen me too. As I mentioned there is swearing and one passionate kiss turned make-out scene.

Obsidian is the first book in The Lux Trilogy, books two and three are untitled and will be released by Entangled Publishing in 2012.

I give Obsidian by Jennifer Armentrout five skullies - it is a definite “pre order it now!” book.

My Thoughts:

When given the opportunity to review Shadowlander I jumped on it. I had read the blurb several months ago and thought it had great potential.

Theresa Meyers creates a fae world that is easy to get lost in. I like the relationship that Catherine and Rook have - it's an immediate attraction and a different dynamic than most paranormal couples. Intent on saving her friend Maya, Catherine and Rook set off into the land of fae where Catherine may pay the ultimate sacrifice for Maya - her own freedom and love.

I normally do not read the romance genre, but I was told the book is more spicey than "romance". Having nothing to compare it to I would say yes, it is spicey. It has a more descriptive sexual situation than some YA books I have read but no more sex than a typical YA read.

Catherine and Rook have a strong bond that I really would love to see more of. I think the couple has more stories to share. Honestly I think that this novella could easily be turned into a novel. I was left wanting more of the development of their relationship.

I would recommend Shadowlander for Adults fans of Richelle Mead's Black Swan series.

Unholy Ghost - tons of bad language but I loved the characters and the story.



The Body Finder - Creepy real life scary things are too much for me. This book is a perfect melding of a little paranormal and realistic bad guy's without giving me nightmares.

Going Too Far - purchased it because it was 4 bucks and loved it.

Mercy Thompson - I really checked this book out 3 or 4 times before reading it. The covers made it look to racey for me and really it is not racey at all. Turned out to be one of my all time faves and introducing me to the world of Urban Fantasy.

Loving What I'm Reading

Tonight I am grateful that time changes. It means I will be able to enjoy 60 minute's of extra reading time by indulging in Jennifer Armentrouts upcoming release, Obsidian from Entangled Publishing. Ya'all are going to love Obsidian for many reasons - first being that her main character has one major thing in common with all of you....

My Thoughts:

Some Dystopian novels are as much make believe as any fairytale story. But then there are those haunting dystopian novels that seem the author has plucked your nightmare out of your head and put it in writing. Legend was that way for me, a nightmare on pages.

While I really had no expectations with Legend by Marie Lu, I did understand it was a dystopian novel. I did not realize that it was written with an alternating girl and boy point of view. I found it refreshing to read the story from Day’s (the boy’s) viewpoint. He saw things clearly and as emotionally driven as his character is, it wasn’t overwhelming. Legend was thought provoking and clever.

The more dystopian I read the more I realize how patriotic and freedom believing I am. I guess it should be no surprise that I feel so connected to characters that believe in freedom and find clever and calculating ways to overthrow a corrupt government. I would like to believe (and know I would be) on the side of Day - a character that was very easy to connect with emotionally. For me Legend ranks with The Hunger Games in YA Dystopian fiction.

I believe a good book is one that stays with you, which makes you think about what you believe or what your actions would be if you were a part of the book. Legend did that for me and for that alone, I recommend you read this book.

Would I buy this book? Yes

Would I recommend my teen read Legend? Yes. Besides being well written and intense I found the actions of Day heroic and inspiring. It’s comforting to believe that there are people in our world that would fight for beliefs until death. That would rise up against a corrupt government and challenge the communistic ideals of a dystopian society. My 16 year old self would have loved this book and honestly Legend would have (and will) made a great discussion book for my High School English class. I think Legend will make an excellent audiobook and appeal to a male YA reader.

What I didn’t like. Sometimes I have a hard time flipping point of view. It feels like as soon as you get into the moment and the reading emotions are intense the voice changes and the reader’s are left wondering what the heck? By the time the characters POV comes back around the emotion is gone, the flood of thought and mood of the writing has disappeared. Parts of Legend felt this way and others had a very smooth transition.

Welcome to the second stop on the Eternal Starling blog tour. Today we have an interview with the lovely Angela Corbett and a giveaway. As a child, Angela Corbett’s most prized possession was a set of read-along books. She used to follow along with the narrator on the stereo and dream of when she would be able to read by herself. Her childhood reading habit led her to consider her future career. However, after consulting with her parents, she realized she had already exceeded hobbit height and since fairies and dragonslayers were tricky jobs to get, she decided she wanted to create worlds of her own. She started writing poetry in elementary school and worked as a journalist in high school and college, but could never leave her love for writing fiction behind. Angela Corbett graduated from Westminster College with a double major in communication and sociology. She started working as a reporter for her local newspaper when she was sixteen and won awards for feature, news, and editorial writing. She has also done freelance writing. In addition to writing, she works as a director of communications and marketing. She lives in Utah with her extremely supportive husband and their five-pound Pomeranian, Pippin, whose following of fangirls could rival Justin Bieber's.

Evie Starling has lived a relatively uneventful life hanging out with friends, gossiping about boys, and driving her 1966 Mustang. All of that changes when she moves to Gunnison, Colorado, to start college and meets two mysterious men.

This is only my second author interview at My Life With Books and I am glad it was Angela. She is fun, sweet and has written one of my favorite books of the year.
The first thing that I fell in love with about Eternal Starling was that Evie is so relatable. The more I learn about her the more I feel connected to her. Is Evie a reflection of you or is she your opposite?

Oh, I definitely see a lot of myself (especially my high school self) in Evie! In addition to sharing a love for classic Mustangs and the sand dunes, I’m pretty stubborn and independent.

In many popular YA fictions the main characters are lacking one or both parents. In Eternal Starling Evie’s parents is both a positive and active influence in her life. Why did you break the mold by writing positive and healthy parental relationships?

I’ve noticed that trend too! Nothing is ever perfect and people always have conflicts, but I really wanted to show that relationships between parents and their kids can be positive if you both respect each other. When I was working as a journalist in high school, I wrote an editorial about teenagers and how adults shouldn’t be so quick to judge them, tell them what to do, or write off their ideas. My parents never treated me that way, and I wanted to write a parent/child relationship based on mutual respect and trust. As a side note, Evie’s parents are named Karen and Denys after Karen Blixen and Denys Finch Hatton from my favorite movie, Out of Africa.

I really enjoyed the legend and history of Alex, Emil and Evie. How did you come up with it?

When I first started outlining, I had a basic idea of Evie, Alex, and Emil’s story, but didn’t realize how in depth it would eventually become. I’m sure there are things about their lives that won’t ever make it into the books, but I needed to know them in order to write the story and be true to the characters. The legend really evolved over the course of revisions. I started the book in June of 2008 and finished it in August of 2008. I spent a year doing revisions, then queried it and kept revising for another year and a half until Pendrell Publishing offered me a three book deal in January 2011. While I was querying Eternal Starling, I started on another project and in the research process for the new book, I read some things about Celtic mythology that intrigued me and I realized how well it could fit into the Eternal Starling story. I took those bits and pieces from Celtic mythology and added it to the mythology I’d already created to make it my own.

Do you know how it all ends or do you write by the seat of your pants and discover what happens along the way?

When I wrote the first draft of Eternal Starling, it was pretty much by the seat of my pants, but I’ve learned my revisions go a lot more smoothly if I outline. I’ve outlined the second book and parts of the third. I like to leave room for the story and characters to take me where they want to go, so I outline basic plot points and character arcs, but I don’t do a really detailed synopsis. I have a basic idea of how it ends, but we’ll see where the story takes me!

There were several moments I had while reading Eternal Starling that I thought: Oh no she didn’t! And oh my heck! Did these moments happen for you while writing?

I get those moments when I come up with an exciting idea or plot twist, then I tend to forget about them. My favorite thing about writing is the first draft because I’m discovering the story much in the same way that a reader discovers it as they read. I love finishing the first draft too. After I’m done, I put it down for a week to get some distance from it, then I do a read-through. I have a lot of those “oh my heck” moments when I read the first draft.

Do you share Evie’s addiction to coffee? What’s your poison?

I’m not addicted, but I do love coffee. This is my favorite time of year because they have the Salted Carmel Mocha at Starbucks! I do have a serious relationship with Mini’s Cupcakes (a local store in Salt Lake City). It’s a good thing the store is 30 minutes away or I’d have mini cupcakes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

How many books will there be in Evie's story? And can you give us a hint (Teeny tiny one? Please) about the future?

There are three books in the Emblem of Eternity series, though when I look at my notes, I often wonder how I’ll fit it all into a trilogy! Hmmm, a hint…let’s see... There’s SO much more to Evie, Alex, and Emil’s story, and you get to find out more about that in book 2.

You like vintage muscle cars and currently own one. Is it the same car as Evie’s?

Yes! I based Evie’s car on the 1966 Mustang I had in high school and still own. I grew up in a family that loved Mustangs. I remember riding in my dad’s 1965 Fastback when I was a kid and loving the way the engine sounded at a stop lights—I loved it even more when I was pulled back in my seat as we took off from the line and passed other cars. I decided I wanted a classic Mustang for my first car and bought it when I was 14. In high school, the car was a maroon color with a white vinyl top. In college, I had it restored and modified it into a dark purple GT Mustang. Evie’s Mustang is based on the restored version of my 1966 Mustang.

Do you have any writing rituals?

I usually write in my living room on the couch late at night. Since everyone is asleep, I can concentrate on writing without any distractions (like my dog walking across the keyboard).  I listen to a lot of music for inspiration, but once I start writing, I need to have it quiet. I also like to write a few important scenes to reintroduce myself to the characters and story before I start writing from the beginning of the book.

How are you handling the pre release stress and anxiety?

I’m doing pretty good! I have a lot of great author and blogger friends who are really supportive and have given me a lot of good advice. It’s been such a long journey for the book to get published that I’m more excited than anxious!

Can you tell us a little about your Eternal Starling launch party?

I’d love to! The launch party is being held at The King’s English Bookshop in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, December 7th at 7:00 PM. I’m speaking, answering questions, and signing books. There will also be door prizes with signed books by some AMAZING authors! Plus, there will be awesome treats, so I hope I get to meet a lot of you there!

Fun Questions:

What was the first candy you picked out of your trick or treat bag.

I’ve always loved Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups! Especially at Halloween because they’re fresh! Stale peanut butter cups are not awesome.

Since its November and nearing the holiday shopping season, are you a black Friday shopper or a Cyber Monday sort a gal?

I’m a planner. I usually have Christmas presents bought before Thanksgiving, though this year, I haven’t even started! So, maybe I’ll find out the answer to that question in a few weeks.  I think I’d rather shop online than deal with the crowds though. I’d much rather shop from the warmth of my living room.

Dance in the kitchen or out on the town?

LOL! It depends on the day. Sometimes I like staying in, other times I like going out. During deadlines, I mostly just sit at my computer and my husband is nice enough to keep me supplied with candy and coffee to make it through.

Sing in the shower or at Karaoke?

Definitely in the shower. No one but my husband and my dog should ever be subjected to my singing voice.

Did you dress your dog up for Halloween? Did YOU dress up for Halloween? What were your costumes?

Our dog rebelled and wouldn’t let me put his bat wings on. Sometimes he’s a princess. I didn’t dress up for Halloween, but I started a tradition a couple of years ago carving pumpkins with book themes. I’ve done the mockingjay from the Hunger Games, a coyote paw print for the Mercy Thompson series, and this year, I was going to carve the lily from Eternal Starling, but didn’t get it done in time. We had a lot of trick-or-treaters though, so that was fun!

Do you have a real world job to support your writing hobby? (Now career)

I do! I work in marketing, advertising and PR.

How are you going to celebrate the release of your book?

I’m doing a live chat with Yara from Once Upon a Twilight on December 6th, then I’m going to have a lot of mini cupcakes!

The Top Ten Books That Made Me FEEL

Hunger Games - This book is packed full of emotion for me. When Katniss takes Prim's place, when Rue dies and when Katniss discovers that Peeta lived. I could go on and on with this one. Mockingjay - Haunting. I loved every minute of hating this book. Anne Frank - I know its not the name of the book, but just hearing her name brings reverence and emotion for me. Harry Potter - Its just magic in every way. I feel like a free spirited kid when I read, listen or watch anything to do with the boy that lived. Nightshade - Not so much the story but what it represents for me. To Kill a Mockingbird - its been a long time since I read this, but it was one of my first literary loves. Legend - After reading several dystopian books, Legend made me realize exactly where I stand on the subject and what I would be willing to do if fiction became reality. The Notebook - Everyone hopes for a love like Noah's and Allie's. Tell Me Again About The Night I Was Born - I cry just thinking about it. ♥ The Alchemist - Every person should read this book. And because 11 is my favorite number: The Vampire Academy - Blood Promise - I really did cry through this entire book. Do you have any writing rituals?

Well, I have to have coffee. Lots and LOTS of coffee. I write better when
the dogs are sitting by my feet. And I absolutely have to have a separate
playlist for each character before I start. It grows and changes a bit as
I go, but I have to have it.

One of my favorite things about Touch was the vast characters and their
abilities. If you were a six what would your talent be? (Or want it to be?)

I’ve given this a lot of thought in the last few weeks. I really think I’d
like to have the ability to talk to animals. Id kinda love to know what
my Akita is thinking when she ís just sitting there. Staring at me. Or
maybe the power to move things with my mind. I could pull a Mickey Mouse
and clean the house while sitting at my computer working. Serious win!

How are you handling all the stress and anxiety accompanying the release
of Touch?

A lot of coffee? (Sensing a trend here?) Seriously though waiting for the
first reviews to come in was hell. It is better now, though I’m betting
I’ll be jittery the night before the paperback releases. Thankfully, I
don’t have a ton of free time to obsess. I’ve been busy working on the
second book, TOXIC, and the novella. When I do feel the stress though, I
like to run, or take the dogs into the woods behind the house for a nice
hike. The leaves are all changing and it is beautiful here.

How did you find out about the early eBook release?

My editor told me the night before. I was terrified. I hadn’t planned on
dealing with release jitters for almost another month. Then, BOOM. I’ve
got 12 hours to get it together. It was amazing, though. The enthusiasm
and love people have for Dez and Kale and the gang give me an unbelievable
amount of warm fuzzies!

When you found out you were going to be published how did you celebrate?

I was actually wicked sick when I found out. Oddly, I was crazy sick when
I signed my agent, too. I’m not sure I like this trend
we put off any major happies until release day. My guy is taking me to
dinner, and that weekend, were having a small release party.

One of my favorite characters that I wanted more of was Dax. Did you have
a character that surprised you, that wants to be written more than the
others? (And do we get more of Dax?;-D)

OMG. You do not know how happy I am to hear you say that! I love Dax. And
if I had to pick one that surprised me, it was him. He started out as a
pass through guy and just wouldn’t get out of my head. If you’re a Dax
fan, you’re in for some awesome surprises in book two. We learn more about
him and see a whole different side of his life.

How many books are in the series?

At the moment, 3 but there are plans for further books as long as these
do well! So far, I’m off to a good start :-) There are also two novellas
coming. The first will be out between books 1 and 2 and will be told from Kale's POV.

Do you belong to a writing/critique group?

I have a critique group. Were called the Army of Awesome and were, um,
awesome? Seriously I’ve got the most amazing crit partners. I’ll chase
them to the ends of the earth should they ever try to leave me *evil
cackle*

How and why did you choose the name Kale and Dez?

To be blunt? Because I’m weird. I like different. Normal names are great,
but just not for me. Plus, apparently I have a thing for names beginning
with Ds and Ks. By the second draft of anything I write, inevitably a ton
of names get changed cause they all start with the same letters. It is
almost funny :-)

I really like the cover of Touch, it has cute guy without the girl
making it unique to other current releases. Did you participate in making
the cover of Touch?

The credit for having just the guy on the cover goes to my editor, Liz. At
first, I’d wanted to have both Dez and Kale on the cover. I was wrong. I
can admit it. My cover is perfect. I want to blow it up and paper my
entire house!

Do you have a regular job to support your writing hobby (now career)?

Nope. This be it for me. I happen to be extremely lucky. I’m married to
the most amazing guy in the world. He insisted I put all my time and
effort into writing (and now gloats and does the I told you so dance on a
daily basis)

Randomness:

Favorite candy?

Hershey’s Kisses are the most awesome candy ever. And that is saying a lot
because technically I’m allergic to chocolate

Favorite sport?

Meh? Never been a sports fan. Does drinking coffee count as a sport? Cause
I could get behind something like that

Dance in the kitchen or at a club?

I’m wicked shy so I have to go with kitchen which stinks cause I love to
dance.

Sing in the shower or at karaoke?

Again, see shy. But really, this is a plus for the public. You do not want
to hear me sing. Glasses shatter, small children cry, and wild animals run
away howling. There is even a theory that my singing voice causes
rainstorms.

Coffee or soda?

Coffeecoffeecoffeecoffeecoffee. Oh, and soda once in awhile. And chocolate
moo.

What are you going to be for Halloween?

Sadly, I have no place to go. Anyone wanna invite me to a party? I'm shy,
but that is what Jell-O shots and dressing up is for!

My Thoughts:

Jus Accardo writes killer chemistry with an action packed and emotional story. Touch is possibly the best read of the year for YA paranormal romance, certainly one of the best debut novels of the year.

While reading Touch I was swallowed by Dez's emotions. I felt anger that was ignited by an infuriating father and his lack of parental relationship. I wasn’t just ticked off as an adult reading Touch, I was actually pissed off in a way I haven’t felt since I was 16. I also felt the rush of adrenaline, laughed, smiled and shed a tear or two with Dez.

I adored Kale, the boy that showers with shoes on. He is sweet, innocent and pure in a childlike way. But he is also a lethal weapon trained to act on the commands of his authoritarian figures.

Dez is a smart mouth, street tough teen that is raising herself and a whole lot of heck for her father. But she is hiding something from him and the rest of the world. She has a secret that she discovered at a young age. It could be the one thing that brings salvation to her life and loved ones or be the thing that damns her to a life of imprisonment.

The chemistry between Kale and Dez is electric, spontaneous, sincere and impossibly perfect. I want more of them and more of the vast characters that emerge throughout the story.

Would I buy this book? Yes

Would I read it again? Already have.

Would I recommend this book for a teen? There is a sex scene, alcohol use, violence and lack of positive parental guidance. While Touch does appeal to teens, it has mature content so I would recommend it as a YA read or to mature teens.

Adults that border on liking YA may have a difficult time appreciating Touch. It is fast paced adventure and like many YA books have constant obstacles the characters must overcome to reach their goal. There is an introduction to many characters and unless you’re paying attention you may miss something key to the story. I for one loved it – Touch will be in my top ten lists of favorite books this year.

My Thoughts:

Twisted is the perfect title for this book. Gena Showalter has literally twisted the world that Aiden lives in leaving me feeling lost, confused and a little peeved at the ending. One of the reasons I have enjoyed the series so much is because the characters are genuine. It was Victoria’s tenacity, Aiden’s selfless humanity, Maryann's Sincerity and Riley’s fierce loyalty that originally drew me deeper and deeper into the story. Twisted breaks these characters and finds them stripped of all they trust and fight for.

For those of you that have read the first two books Intertwined and Unraveled, I would wait to read Twisted until the final book is released (untitled June 2012). Gena Showalter is a very talented author and I am certain has an incredible and shocking ending to the series planned. One that will make me want to read Twisted again because it will make more sense. I am certain Twisted is an emotional set up for book four.

I gave Twisted three skullies because I am invested in the series and I have faith that it will all make sense when I read the 4th book. What I did like was seeing the characters more subdued personality traits surface. Maryann is actually a little smart mouth and it was kind of funny. The other positive aspect of this book was finally meeting Victoria's brother.

Zombie Do - Or Don't In My case

Tonight as I was contemplating zombie's I realized I don't like any zombies. So I decided to go with zombie books I like. Then I realized I haven't really read any zombie books. Here is my short list of read zombie books - looking for recommendations if you have any. :) The Chronicles of Nick is an entertaining YA series that is appealing to both boys and girls. Dru kicks zombie butt and the last book of the series comes out next week. Looking forward to a little Graves Lupe Guru paybacks. (mwahahahaha) Made me think, made me gag and made me want to hone my survival skills. What about you? Any good zombie book recommendations?

Witch is your fave?

One of my favorite childhood Halloween memories was dressing up as a witch. My mom made me a wonderful black witch gown and I painted my face green. I thought I was so bad in my pointy hat. (I still have that witch gown) It was a rainy and cold Tuesday. I scared the toddler kid next door and was hooked. It was my first paranormal fix and from then on, I couldn't wait for Halloween. Last week I read a blog and the author listed her favorite witches. As I sat in meetings yesterday my mind kept wondering to the list and who would be on mine. So I thought I would share my favorite all time witches. (Whoever wrote that post, I am sorry I didn't bookmark you and if I new who it was I would give you credit for the idea! If it was you leave a comment so I can link you up.) Witch Hazel from Disney's Trick or Treat cartoon. Haven't seen it? Google it, it will make you feel like a kid again. Willow is just awesome but seriously scary when evil. Dedicated Charmed one here Loved this book! I Like Bonnie better in the show than in the book. The Sanderson Sisters, need I say more? I think not. The Secret Circle was a good read, but I think Cassie Blake and her coven are even better as a TV series. Quite possibly the brightest witch of her age. Hermione Granger. :) Which witch put a spell on you?

A: There is a reason I read paranormal books. I think the scariest monsters are humans. For that reason I really avoid horror books and movies because they are usually riddled with psychotic murderers and rapist. Things that can happen in real life terrify me - so for now the scariest thing I have read is The Body Finder. I know, really? Its not that scary - but for a gal who prefers spooks and shadows to corporeal terrors, The Body Finder had me sleeping with the light on.

Although, now that I think about it, The Hunger Games haunted my dreams. A crashed and controlling government may not be that far from reality.

“My youngest brother, Nate is an amazing visionary. Out of college in 2002, he formed an Indie band called Sherwood. How he convinced five guys to pack up in a white van and tour across the country, literally singing each night for gas and food is beyond me. They did this for years before eventually getting signed with a smaller label, then landed a contract with My Space Records where they toured the world. His vision for the band kept things going when it would have been so much easier to quit. author of Possession will be at the Logan Library. I don't know if she will be speaking or just signing, but I can tell you she is funny and entertaining. I went to a book signing of Elana's this week and enjoyed her sarcasm and wit.

But no one makes Vi want to break the Rules more than Zenn…and since the Thinkers have chosen him as Vi’s future match, how much trouble can one kiss cause? Why do we like to be SCARED?By Jody Kihara

Halloween is approaching, and many people I know are looking for good scary books and movies to get them in the mood. With the paperback release of my own Halloween-themed book, this has got me wondering… why do we enjoy being scared?

Most of us don’t like being scared in real life AT ALL! Being followed by a stranger, hearing a creak on the stairs in the middle of the night, seeing a huge spiderweb on the porch but no knowing where the spider is… no thanks!
Yet people love horror movies, paranormal books, and the haunted house at the fair. Why?

I love thrillers, mysteries, suspense, and paranormal, but have no interest in horror, especially horror movies. To me, most horror movies have either ‘stock’ plots and are rife with clichés, or they’re just plain gory… but the ones that are really original are TOO scary for me! (Emily Rose, anyone? Even the Sixth Sense had me scared to get out of bed at night!) Books seem to strike the better balance for me. I guess I like the thrill factor, but at the same time the safety factor: it’s not real! (Except for Emily Rose – shiver!)
In the spirit of scare-factor research, I’d love to hear everyone else’s thoughts on this: Why do you like being scared? HOW scared do you want to be? When is a book or movie TOO scary? Or not scary enough? And if you have kids, how do you decide beforehand if a book or movie will be too scary for them?

My Thoughts:

White Witch Pond is a great middle grade novel for both a paranormal beginner and fan. The story is scary enough that it gives you chills and makes you look over your shoulder but will not give you nightmares.

My twelve year old self would have loved this novel. If you are a hard core adult paranormal fan this book may not be for you. Shaya is a sincere and innocent twelve year old girl who narrates this story. She is on the fringe of independance and fights hard to do what she believes is right.

There is no mature content. Just an irritating but lovable brother and mom who is doing a great job at expressing love and concern for her children.

Top Ten Books I Wish I Could Read Again for the First Time

I honestly have had hard time with this weeks top ten Tuesday. I tried to recall the books that gave me the most exhilarating emotions when I read them the first time.

1. Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone.
The first book I read with a magic element. I still get chills when I close my eyes and imagine Hogwarts - It makes me feel like a kid again.
2. The Hunger Games
I remember feeling breathless when Katniss volunteers for Prim's place in the reaping.

3. Nightshade
A female alpha? Need I say more?

4. The Body Finder
I don't do murder mystery books well. But The Body Finder is written in a scary and terrifying way, but with a PG rating. I had to sleep with the hall light on.

5. Touch
With a thundering heart I finished Touch last week. I had to re read it again because it was so fast paced I felt like I either missed something or needed the adrenaline rush just one more time.

October 11- James Dashner The Death Cure launch party @ The Kings English Bookshop 7:00 P.M. TKE will launch James Dashner's The Death Cure, the conclusion to The New York Times best selling Maze Runner Trilogy. James is also the author of the 13th Reality series.

Loving What I'm Reading

Guys, how have I lived without reading this series? Oh my goodness, I checked it out from the library five times (FIVE TIMES!) before reading it. I devoured book one Darkfever in one day and really can't stop thinking about book two Bloodfever now that I have started it.

And I am sure I won't be able to read anything else until I finish these three books.

Utah Author Events October 3-8

October is a very busy month in Utah for Young Adult book fans. The Kings English and Provo City Library have some AMAZING authors that will be signing - be sure to thank them when you attend the event.

If you plan on going to one of these book signings, let me know! I would love to meet you. :) If you know of an event that I do not have listed please tell me so we can get the word out. The better the turnout for these events the more likely popular authors will continue to come to Utah.

Sacrificial Magic will be released by Del Rey Books on March 27, 2012. The Downsider series or Chess Putnam as its been called is surprisingly one of my favorite series. Its not a typical read for me because its a darker, gritty and sexier book than I usually read. I was surprised when Stacia Kane sucked me into the world of Triumph City and got me addicted to the characters snarky and cynical attitudes. Sacrificial Magic is the number one pre order on my list for 2012. I am missing Terrible and Chess, maybe I should head back to my Top Ten Tuesday list and reread the series! :-D What I Am Wishing for was inspired by Jill at Breaking The Spine's Waiting On Wednesday

She has come to terms with the fact that seeing ghosts is part of her life, but she isn’t ready to let being a Waker dictate her choices. All she wants is a ghost-free senior year with her boyfriend, Brent, and her best friend, Cherie. But Yara soon discovers that there are more dark secrets in her school’s history than just the curse she broke. While an angry ghost makes Yara question everything she thought she knew about spirits, she and Brent learn that there are long reaching consequences to last year’s adventures. As new enemies emerge and old ghosts resurface, Yara finds herself in the center of another deadly mystery, and this time she has to contend with the living as well as the dead.

My Thoughts:

Indelible starts off with a new school year for Yara. She has been away from her friends for the summer in Brazil training with Vovo on how to be a good Waker. Yara and her friends are excited to reunite and resume a normal school year. Or so they thought....

Yara's abilities haunt her wherever she goes. She is learning to cope with the realization that she will see and deal with ghost in every aspect of her life. She also has unique abilities that are enhancing and disturbing her Waker skills. Her relationship with Brent is even better in this book, not only because we get to see them interact as a couple but because they function much more realistically - its not all roses anymore.
Unfortunately for Yara, she is learning that there are people in both of her worlds (physical and spiritual) that would take advantage of her and her skills. As Yara develops her Waker skills she becomes more confident and afraid of her own power. Vovo plays a bigger part in this book and she is a character that I really enjoy reading about. I can imagine that Yara will someday be much like her Vovo.

I liked that we got to see more of Cherie and Steve in Indelible. They play a larger roll in the plot and become a dependable support group for both Yara and Brent. There are new characters introduced that throw in an unexpected twist on the story. I hope we get to see more of them in the next book.

The first quarter of Indelible isn't as exciting as Intrinsical and I was worried that I was going to be disappointed. Then BAM! I couldn't put it down! I won't say anything else about the sudden excitement for fear of spoilers. Just trust me on this one - as hard as it is to believe, Indelible trumps Intrinsical.

What I liked about Intrinsical is that Yara is no longer fighting who she is. With the help of friends and family she is growing into a strong young woman who stands firm in her beliefs, thinks things through before acting and is learning to serve the unseen selflessly. I for one can't get enough of The Yara Silva Trilogy.

And the ending freaking rocked. (I actually giggled with happy anticipation!)

Indelible will be released in e format on September 27, 2011. The publishing date for print copies has been moved back to October. Here is what Pendrell Publishing had to say:

Intrinsical by Lani Woodland {Book Review}

IntrinsicalThe Yara Silva Trilogy by Lani Woodland Sixteen-year-old Yara Silva has always known that ghosts walk alongside the living. Her grandma, like the other females in her family, is a Waker, someone who can see and communicate with ghosts. Yara grew up watching her grandmother taunted and scorned for this unusual ability and doesn't want that to be her future. She has been dreading the day when she too would see ghosts, and is relieved that the usually dominant Waker gene seems to have skipped her, letting her live a normal teenage life. However, all that changes for Yara on her first day at her elite boarding school when she discovers the gene was only lying dormant. She witnesses a dark mist attack Brent, a handsome fellow student, and rushes to his rescue. Her act of heroism draws the mist's attention, and the dark spirit begins stalking her. Yara finds herself entrenched in a sixty-year-old curse that haunts the school, threatening not only her life, but the lives of her closest friends as well. Yara soon realizes that the past she was trying to put behind her isn't going to go quietly

My Thoughts:

It seems there are a lot of paranormal books where a young girl is sent to private school and discovers she has supernatural abilities. For these reasons you would think that the story line of Intrinsical would be overdone and boring right? WRONG! On page one I realized that Lani Woodland wrote a wonderful story that sets itself apart from most YA paranormal books.

I read the first paragraph of Intrinsical and stopped, looked at the cover and description thinking "this is a young adult book"? I reread the first paragraph and surmised that Intrinsical is not a dumb downed YA book. It's not that the language was Lord of the Rings -like but it also wasn't valley girl speak. At this point I knew I would like Intrinsical - knowing that it would be a paranormal read that also required more mind power if you will. (Bigger more descriptive words and a world I am not familiar with meant paying more attention to the story)

Lani Woodlands vivid imagery has me recalling even the tiniest detail. She creates a world that is absolutely realistic while throwing in a completely paranormal world too. While reading I was lost in the story forgetting about time and other responsibilities that needed my attention.

What Intrinsical does lack is a love triangle - and for that I am grateful. There is however a beautiful love story unlike any I have read before. I liked that the relationship Yara forms with her friend Brent. It is a strong friendship filled with trust, faith, communication and honesty - not physical contact. Proving that people can have relationships without smoochies.

If I were a teen girl Brent would be my book crush. He is adorable and everything a girl wants (and deserves) in a boy.

Intrinsical is a book that I would recommend for any young adult and adult reader that enjoys romance and some paranormal elements. There is NO swearing nor is there any sex in Intrinsical. There is some talk of suicide and murder - but both topics lack details. What I also liked and is a rarity in YA novels is that Yara has a close family with traditional family values.

Would I buy Intrinsical? Yes, it has been added to the for "when Morgan is a teen" bookshelf. I also think it would be a fun mother daughter read.
