Utah Author Events March 25 - April 6

I've scoured the bookstore websites and can only find events coming up at The Kings English Bookshop. That's OK with me, they know how to host an event and if by chance I can't make it they are very accommodating when I order an autographed book.

If you need to order one for yourself give them a call at 801-484-9100

****
I know this is a children's book but if you're raising young readers like I am you may have already encountered Jack and Annie. This will be a fun event and the way my little girls eyes light up when we talk about the books it will be a magical event.

April 3, 4PM @ The Kings English Bookshop

Mary Pope Osborne's Magic Tree House series comes to life! This live event will include a performance by brother - sister duo Jack and Annie, audience participation, and original songs followed by a "meet and greet" book stamping.

In order for as many kids as possible to meet Jack and Annie, they will stamp only one book from home per child. Jack and Annie will also stamp all new books purchased at The Kings English.

*****
April 4, 7 PM @ The Kings English & SLC Library present
Robin LaFevers @ the Sprague Branch 2131 Highland Drive

Robin is the author of Grave Mercy and Dark Triumph.

That's all I have for the next two weeks! If you know of an event coming up let me know and I will add it to the post.

Happy Reading!

Ophelia London's Abby Road Blog Tour & Giveaway/Guest Post/Review

I am absolutely thrilled to be kicking off Ophelia London's Abby Road Blog Tour! Today's tour stop is a guest post by the lovely Ophelia London herself. After the guest post you will find my review of Abby road and then a Rafflecopter form full of wonderful prizes including an iPod shuffle, print copy of Abby Road and an e book copy of Abby road.

Last October I had the opportunity to interview Ophelia London during her Playing at Love blog tour. It was at this time that fell in love with her writing - and learned that Ophelia is truly a wonderfully fun and genuine person. Since then I have read two more of her books, both have been exceptional and rank as some of my all time favorites.

More about Ophelia London:

Hey there. Nice to see you. You might know me as Ophelia London—the chick writer who signed with Entangled Publishing. (squeee!!) I sometimes go by that other name, too—but she’s way less exciting. Born and raised in California, my car broke down on my way to Florida, and I've lived in Dallas ever since.

During daytime hours, I am the marketing department's “Head Babysitter.” But when the sun goes down, the laptop comes out. I Am Writer. Hear Me Type.

"Playing at Love," the first book in my Sweet Kisses series, will launch into the ebook universe on September 25, 2012 Its spin off, "Speaking of Love..." will land in January 2013.Both are part of Entangled Publishing's brand new Bliss imprint. Isn't that the cutest name?

My dreamy little debut print novel, "Abby Road," is slanted for a March 2013 release.
Until I find true love and/or become a famous pop star, I’ll keep writing about it.

I love great books, sweet treats, complicated sweaters, live music, looking at Adam Levine, and all things Hitchcock. I can dwell for hours over changing a comma to a semi-colon. Pretty shoes make me happy, as do pretty cupcakes and chocolate in general. I loathe writing query letters. It sometimes takes me a week to read a 250-page novel because I’ll read a sentence, smile, think about it, love it, then reread the entire page to relive the full effect. I dream about being at the beach practically every day but love being cozy at home most of all. I don’t deny that I’m not cool enough for Coldplay but a bit too cool for Mandy Moore—both are all over my iPod. I’ve attended 20+ shows at London’s West End, and I saw (in the theater, first run) "Star Wars, the Phantom Menace" 16 times. Most days you can find me wishing I was wearing a fabulous hat or singing karaoke in my car. I find Ryan Seacrest both fascinating and repulsive. I firmly believe that my conflicting personality makes me charming; as does my sarcasm.

Abby Road
Abby Road by Ophelia London

Touted by the tabloids as the biggest rock star of our generation, Abigail Kelly is used to being in the spotlight. But beyond the glam of Hollywood, her world is falling apart. Still reeling from the death of her brother and wilting under the iron fist of Max, her manager, Abby banishes herself to the secluded beaches of Florida for the summer, thinking some anonymity and sunshine are just what she needs. What she finds, instead, is Todd, an ex-marine eager to embrace life after war. Together, Abby and Todd find the balance Abby’s life has been missing.

That is, until Max resurfaces, demanding Abby return to Los Angeles to record her band’s newest album. As the pressures of public appearances, paparazzi, and late-night recordings start to mount, Abby will have to risk everything or lose the life she always dreamed of.

Ophelia London’s Abby Road is a love letter to music—both the kind you cherish and the kind you create—as well as a beautiful love story that proves even when everyone in the world can recognize your face, the only people who matter are those who can see inside your heart.

Hi, my name is Ophelia, and I write about romance. I read about romance. I eat, drink, talk and breathe romance. Romance makes me happy. Have I mentioned I love the romance? But let’s talk about the writing part.

Entangled Publishing recently released my first print novel, Abby Road. Yay! It’s got most of the elements of a standard romance: tropical setting, a likeable heroine with emotional baggage, and most importantly, a sexy hero with an accent. You’re welcome. Because my stories are heavy on the make-out sessions and light on the naked time, a lot of people have asked me why I don’t write YA.

“Surely,” they say, “there’s less pressure to write the bedroom scenes in YA stories, yeah?”

True. And good question. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE a good YA. In fact, my book club has organically moved away from Oprah’s books to reading nothing but YA. So yeah, I’m a fan. And, generally speaking, yes, the apex of a YA romance isn’t necessarily when the hero and heroine tumble into bed. More often, it’s a first boyfriend, a first kiss or the first time they ever say “I love you” to someone. So sweet, those firsts.

When it comes to my own writing, however, I’m less interesting in telling stories about first loves, and more interesting in telling stories about last loves. The loves that stick. The forever soul mate kinds. The true happily ever afters.

Ooh! I get chills just thinking about all that love!

Admit it, one of the reasons we adore Jane Austen is because her stories end in a wedding. Darcy and Elizabeth against the world. Case closed. In romance, there’s nothing quite as satisfying as knowing that there really doesn’t have to be a next book…we know everything is going to be all right. Love had conquered all and we can go to sleep.

When it comes to contemporary, Katie Fforde is one of my favorite authors. I think what attracted me to her little love stories is, well first of all, they take place in the English countryside (the most charming setting ever!), but mostly because many of them end in a proposal—sometimes these proposals are shouted. Her heroes are bossy in the sexiest way. Look her up; she’s awesome.

As both a reader and a writer, I’ve been chasing those happily ever afters for as long as I can remember. So, here’s to first loves, last loves, and those of us who are somewhere in between. Until I find my bossy Mr. Darcy (and he better have an accent!), I’ll keep on writing.

My thoughts on Abby Road

What I liked:
Abby Road is an exceptionally tender, heart wrenching and unique book. Its endearing story touched me as I am sure it will you. I loved the moments my heart ached, when I laughed out load or when my heart warmed with the growth of the characters. I loved that Abby rescued herself.

I liked that Todd, the heartthrob, is flawed yet willing to work on the relationship and better himself. I like that he isn't threatened by Abby’s success and allows her to be who she is, challenges her to be more, and when needed can step away and allow Abby to figure out what she needs to do to be happy. I loved that he was a gentleman in every way.

I liked how Ophelia London cleverly wrote Abby figuring out what kind of heartache she was putting her loved ones through and the realization that she must forgive herself in order to move on.

I enjoyed Abby’s friends and immediately felt the comradeship they had with each other. The guys in the band were loyal and fun.

What I didn't like:
Max, the band manager, but I think that was supposed to happen.

Who would I recommend Abby Road to?
I recommend Abby Road to adult readers who love romance but shy away from the explicit sex scenes of traditional romance novels. Abby Road is full of kissing, hand holding and talking – all essential romance elements, but it stops there. It is a feel good book that breaks your heart then mends it, breaks it again and then makes it whole by fusing it with the best kind of love there is – loving yourself.

While Abby Road is not a Young Adult novel, I think those adult readers out there who prefer the YA genre will appreciate reading it because it’s like an adult -YA book. (Hope that makes sense!)

Rating:
I give Abby Road 5 Skulls. It is an emotional ride full of joy, pain, forgiveness, love and happiness. A ride I would gladly go on again, because Ophelia London knows how to write a happily ever after.

Samanthe Beck's Private Practice Blog Tour & Guest Post

I am very excited to have Samanthe Beck here for a guest post today! Samanthe is the author of Private Practice available now from Entangled Publishing. (Amazon - Barnes and Noble)

About Samantha:
Beach Bum, book junkie, and award winning author of sexy contemporary romances, Samanthe recently signed with Entangled Publishing to write three novels for their Brazen line!

Sam was transfixed from an early age with any tale featureing a handsome prince, a great dress, and, of course, the all-important kiss, and eventually aspired to write her own happily-ever-afters. Naturally, she became a lawyer. The legal world heaved a sigh of relief a few years ago when Samanthe retired from law to take the plunge as a writer.

When not living the glamorous life of a romance author (i.e., chaned to her computer), Samanthe keeps busy with the care and feeding of her extremely patient prince-charming of a husband, a not-so-patient ball of energy known as their son, a furry ninja named Kitty, and Bebe, the trash talkin' Chihuhua. Their love, support, and willingness to eat Pizza Hut three or more times a week enables Samanthe to pursue her literary dreams.

Private Practice
He’ll teach her how to bring a man to his knees…

Dr. Ellie Swan has a plan: open her practice in tiny Bluelick, Kentucky, so she can keep an eye on her diabetic father, and make hometown golden-boy Roger Reynolds fall in love with her. But Ellie has a problem. Roger seeks a skilled, sexually adventurous partner, and bookish Ellie doesn’t qualify.

Tyler Longfoot only cares about three things: shaking his bad boy image, qualifying for the loan his company needs to rehab a piece of Bluelick’s history, and convincing Ellie to keep quiet about the “incident” that lands him on her doorstep at two a.m. with a bullet in his behind.

The adorable Dr. Swan drives a mean bargain, though. If sex-on-a-stick Tyler will teach Ellie how to bring a man to his knees, she’ll forget about the bullet. Armed with The Wild Woman's Guide to Sex and Tyler’s lessons, Ellie is confident she can become what Roger needs…if she doesn’t fall for Tyler first.

Sam Beck’s Top Five Slump-Busters
Entangled Publishing’s super-sexy Brazen line recently released my debut novel, Private Practice. I can hear you asking yourselves, “What the heck does she know about writing slumps? She’s got one measly book under her belt.” To this I reply, are you freaking kidding? In the time it takes me to crank out sixty thousand words any normal person could have written the modern literary equivalent of the complete works of Shakespeare…or at least the The Hunger Games.  I’m slow. I get lost in my own plots. I fall out of love with scenes before they’re half-done.  Yet somehow, I have managed to finish several manuscripts, so, I may not know ANYTHING else, but I do know a thing or two about moving forward even when my muse stubbornly refuses to give up the goods. I have consolidated the wisdom here, in the form of Sam Beck’s Top Five Slump-Busters:

  1. Scour the Internet for photos of hot guys who look like your hero. This could take hours, but you won’t mind. Some people might call this “messing around,” but I call it “research.” If I’m not feeling my characters, or their scenes lack life, could be I’m having trouble picturing them. Sometimes a little visual stimulation gets me rolling again. Then I can go back to the flat scene and mention how the seams of my hero, Tyler Longfoot’s, wash-worn jeans strain a little when he straddles his Harley. Or how the small tear along the neck of his t-shirt makes my heroine, Ellie Swann, wonder if she can rip the thing right off him.
  2. Think, “What would happen if my hero and heroine had sex right now?” I hear you talking again. You’re saying, “But Sam, I’m only at the second sentence of my story,” or, “They’re at a funeral,” or whatever. Look, I’m not saying you have to keep the darn scene in, but when you’re slumping, you need to reconnect with the fun of writing and, for me, the sexy bits are fun. Chances are you’ll use it later. Somehow.
  3. Throw a gun into the mix. “No way,” you’re saying. “My story is a light-hearted contemporary romance. Nobody gets shot.” I don’t care. You’re stuck. Shoot somebody. Do it now.  I shot Tyler in the ass in the first chapter of Private Practice. And you know what? I’m not sorry. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
  4. Make a list of the six worst things that could happen to your hero at that very moment in the story.  Make a separate list for your heroine. Get out the darts. Good luck. Did this technique put Ellie’s drunk, angry father on her doorstep in the middle of the night, mere seconds after Tyler finished…um… introducing her to Thumper—a little something he picked up during their trip to the adult toy emporium, Slap n’ Tickle?  Maybe.

At this point I’m sure you’re less surprised to know I have completed manuscripts and more surprised to know some of them actually sold. Some did. In fact, my next Brazen releases in April! This last Slump-Buster probably accounts for that result more than any of the foregoing.

  1. Re-read your favorite book by your favorite author. No, you’re not going to steal any plot threads or anything else. But you love this book. Chances are it inspires you, and that’s what you’re after—a little inspiration. Try to put your finger on which story elements keep you craving more even though you know exactly what’s going to happen, (humor, your emotional connection to the heroine, your deep, abiding lust for the hero, fascinating secondary characters)? Then think about your story. Are your “must have” factors present and accounted for?

What about you? Any sure-fire slump busters in your tool-kit? Do share!

What the heck? Stupid Google.

I just heard that Google is "retiring" Google reader on July 1st.. Is this old news and I have just had my nose stuck in a book so I missed it?
Has anyone else heard this?

What do you think?

Will you stay with Google or, like me, is this is pushing you to another platform?

L♥ving What I'm Reading

Patricia Briggs Frost Burned - A Mercy Thompson Novel.

I would go into more detail about why I am loving this book but as I started to tell you why I loved it - it became my book review. And I'm not ready for that yet. Just know if you like urban fantasy at all, you MUST start the Mercy Thompson series.

Frost Burned (Mercy Thompson Series #7)
Mercy Thompson’s life has undergone a seismic change. Becoming the mate of Adam Hauptman—the charismatic Alpha of the local werewolf pack—has made her a stepmother to his daughter Jesse, a relationship that brings moments of blissful normalcy to Mercy’s life. But on the edges of humanity, what passes for a minor mishap on an ordinary day can turn into so much more…

After an accident in bumper-to-bumper traffic, Mercy and Jesse can’t reach Adam—or anyone else in the pack for that matter. They’ve all been abducted.

Through their mating bond, all Mercy knows is that Adam is angry and in pain. With the werewolves fighting a political battle to gain acceptance from the public, Mercy fears Adam’s disappearance may be related—and that he and the pack are in serious danger. Outclassed and on her own, Mercy may be forced to seek assistance from any ally she can get, no matter how unlikely.

It is awesome!

Top Ten Tuesday...Top Ten Series I'd Like To Start But Haven't Yet

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish

  1. Bloodlines by Richelle Mead - I loved the Vampire Academy series and have no idea why I have not started reading this series. I even have the books!
  2. The weather Warden series by Rachel Caine - Rachel Caine is my go to author, I love everything she writes and again, I have this series why haven't I read it?
  3. The Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris - Another series I have but have not read.
  4. Dust and Decay by Jonathan Mayberry - I have the first book in the series and gave it to my husband to read. He really enjoyed it and ask me at least once a month if I have started it or not.
  5. Sherlyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunter Series - I have totally enjoyed the Chronicles of Nick and it is set in the same world.
  6. Fablehaven by Brandon Mull - This is my families favorite juvenile fiction and really need to read it. Again I have this box set.

  8. Beyonders by Brandon Mull - Again a recommendation from the hubs. We have this set on audiobook.

  10. Across the Universe by Beth Revis - I stood in line to get Beth Revis to sing my copy of Across the Universe and then never read it. She is adorably funny and I enjoyed every minute of her book signing. I just have never gotten around to reading it.

Interview and Giveaway / The Valentine Challenge Blog Tour

Today I am excited to be interviewing Marisa Cleveland author of The Valentine Challenge.
Learn more about Marisa Cleveland
On your blog you list several reasons why you want to be a romance writer. The steps are excellent life lessons, is this something writing taught you or that you learned in life and brought to your writing?
Oh, wow! Thanks so much for reading my blog! I love that post. :) I am addicted to romance and figured out those reasons after a bunch of people asked me why I want to be a romance writer.
In your book The Valentines Challenge, your main character Stacey has to prove to her boss Marshall that true love exists. How did you come up with the idea for your book?
I love office romances, fish out of water, and undercover anything. I wanted to allow Stacey and Marsh a future, without either of them having to sacrifice their careers, and since this is a little novella, I had a limited amount of pages to get them together and spark that friendship that is the foundation for my books. The idea for proving love exists stemmed from a late night (early morning) conversation with my hubby about what each of us would do to prove we loved the other "more."
What are your hobbies and how do you find time to do them?
Hobbies... reading and writing. Drinking espressos. Every now and then I will just crash in bed to recoup for a whole day.
You write on your blog “ONE DAY, WHILE BENDING OVER TO PICK UP A HEAD’S UP PENNY, A LIMO PULLED TO THE CURB.  BY THE TIME I STOOD AND FOCUSED ON THE GUY EXITING THE VEHICLE, I KNEW I’D FOUND MY PRINCE CHARMING.” This is an amazingly romantic event in your life. Have you always been a romantic person?
Don't judge me --- well, okay, judge me --- but no. I have always loved romance novels, but I didn't buy into them until I met my hubby. In my younger years, I didn't really believe in love, because I saw how some people used the word to manipulate other people.
You have had many different jobs. What has been your favorite?
Writing and agenting! :) Although neither of those really feel like a job.
Recently on your blog you ask the question “ In your opinion, what is the best valentines gift you’ve received?
Time alone with my husband.
Swedish fish make you smile. Is snacking on them a writing ritual or do you have other rituals that accompany your writing?
Swedish fish remind me of everything lovely in the world. I'm smiling right now just thinking about them. :) I don't think I have rituals when I write, but maybe I do and don't realize it. Oh, wait! Stretching. I stretch before I settle in to write, unless I'm quickly jotting down a scene. If I'm planning on staying for an hour or more, I stretch before I begin.
What inspires you?
It is an amazing time to be alive, and I find inspiration everywhere. I know that's not a very concrete answer, but inspiration is difficult to pin down.
When and how did you decide you wanted to become a writer?
This answer changes depending on who you ask. My mom remembers me making up stories on my antique Apple IIe, but I first realized I could become a writer when I met Judi McCoy at a gymnastics meet. She told me to join RWA, and it felt like I'd found the mother planet.
Some general silliness:
What is your favorite Easter candy?
Godiva has this amazing dark chocolate mousse truffle creme egg.
Favorite movie?
My favorite anything changes depending on my mood. But I'll stop what I'm doing to see a Hugh Jackman film.
Do you sing in the shower?
Hahahaa... My husband wouldn't call it singing... but yes, I make some sort of vocal attempt.
Your guilty pleasure?
Pleasure as in singular? Hehehee. I have so many! Um... pedicures! I am a germaphobe, but I insist on regularly scheduled pedicures at this one place that is supposed to have hospital-grade sterilization, and yes, I might feel a little queasy at the cost, but it's worth it!
Favorite show?
On Broadway? The Boy From Oz.

Olivia
He tilts my chin up so my eyes meet his, his thumb brushing lightly across my lips. I close my eyes. I know Z is trouble. I know that being with him is going to get me into trouble. I don’t care.

At least at this moment, I don’t care.

Tossed from foster home to foster home, Olivia’s seen a lot in her sixteen years. She’s hardened, sure, though mostly just wants to fly under the radar until graduation. But her natural ability with computers catches the eye of Z, a mysterious guy at her new school. Soon, Z has brought Liv into his team of hacker elite—break into a few bank accounts, and voila, he drives a motorcycle. Follow his lead, and Olivia might even be able to escape from her oppressive foster parents. As Olivia and Z grow closer, though, so does the watchful eye of Bill Sykes, Z’s boss. And he’s got bigger plans for Liv…

I can picture Liv’s face: wide-eyed, trusting. Her smooth lips that taste like strawberry Fanta.
