Book Review and Tour: Angel on Fire by Jacquie Johnson

All Angela wants is to understand why her father, security specialist Mac McKenzie, dropped dead on a sidewalk in Boston. Instead, she is thrust into the midst of an international conspiracy when she discovers that her father was working on a classified project at the time of his death. Now, the FBI, a terrorist and a killer have her in their sights.

Former Navy SEAL turned undercover operative, Chase Romero thinks his boss is overreacting when he orders Chase to small town America to protect Angela. But he changes his mind when her home is burglarized and “accidents” begin to happen. The real question becomes, how can he keep her safe if he keeps tripping over his own heart?

Jacqueline_Wade_Final-1After shooting an intruder, Angela flees the scene, and the FBI issues a warrant for her arrest. On the run for her life and her freedom, she places her trust in Chase. As they travel from New England, to the nation’s capital, to the shores of Lake Michigan, the trail – and their attraction – grow hotter. Together, they team up to prevent a global financial market meltdown and face a killer who will stop at nothing to get his hands on the project Mac protected with his life.

My thoughts:
The first page of the prologue in Angel on Fire had my adrenaline spiked and heart racing. Jacquie Johnson's writing is intense and emotional. Just as quickly as she had my blood pumping she made me feel sorrow and despair for Angela Mckenzie as she suffers at her father's funeral.

Feeling like normalcy would be the best thing for her, Angela heads home to discover a burglary in progress. From there the she is thrown into a series of events that leaves her fleeing the law and trusting a complete stranger with her life. The stranger Chase Romero, has an unexplainable pull for Angela, she trust him, she shouldn't but she does.

Angel on Fire is full of well planned mystery and this incredible action adventure has sparked a new found desire to read more in the thrilling mystery genre.

The good:
While Chase is a controlling man he is also a very likeable character. Watching him grow and deal with emotions he wrestles with is exciting and entertaining.

The plot is thorough enough that it's easy to follow the story giving you what you need to almost figure it out, then realize you are completely wrong. Angel on Fire read like putting small puzzle pieces together and not really seeing the picture until the end when you step back and get a full view of the completed and awesome masterpiece.

I read Angel on Fire in one setting and really hope that author Jacquie Johnson will bring more of the Angel on Fire characters back for another adventure.

The Bad:
The editing is flawless with one exception. While really there are only a couple of sex scenes that are  not described in detail - just leaving you to your own imagination, there is a lot of heat that seems unnecessary. I get that sex sells but this story is so good it honestly doesn't need it. I felt like the fight to control an off limits but very hot attraction between Chase and Angela was needed to display an ethical working relationship that is inevitably going to lead to more; the kissing scenes could have been less. I found them distracting because it lead me off the plot track and were long. Specifically one scene that had me putting my kindle down and wondering if I wanted to continue reading  The story really didn't need this kind of heat so much. The attraction was evident in the rest of the writing and for me, the nonverbal cues of the relationship were more intimate, intense and sincere leaving me yearning for more of this type of heat.

I am glad I persevered because it did settle down and Angel on Fire became one of the best reads I have enjoyed in a long time.

The rating:
I give Angel on Fire four skullies, a definite buy for those of you are just testing the waters of the murder mystery genre, although I do believe a seasoned reader of this genre would enjoy it as well. It reminded me of the few novels I have read written by Nora Roberts crossed with the movie the Fugitive. I wrestled with giving it a five skully review but because of "the bad" listed above I couldn't do it.

Cover Reaveal and book Exerpt: taste by Kate Evangelista

At Barinkoff Academy, there's only one rule: no students on campus after curfew. Phoenix McKay soon finds out why when she is left behind at sunset. A group calling themselves night students threaten to taste her flesh until she is saved by a mysterious, alluring boy. With his pale skin, dark eyes, and mesmerizing voice, Demitri is both irresistible and impenetrable. He warns her to stay away from his dangerous world of flesh eaters. Unfortunately, the gorgeous and playful Luka has other plans.
When Phoenix is caught between her physical and her emotional attraction, she becomes the keeper of a deadly secret that will rock the foundations of an ancient civilization living beneath Barinkoff Academy. Phoenix doesn’t realize until it is too late that the closer she gets to both Demitri and Luka the more she is plunging them all into a centuries old feud.

When Kate Evangelista was told she had a knack for writing stories, she did the next best thing: entered medical school. After realizing she wasn't going to be the next Doogie Howser, M.D., Kate wandered into the Literature department of her university and never looked back. Today, she is in possession of a piece of paper that says to the world she owns a Literature degree. To make matters worse, she took Master's courses in creative writing. In the end, she realized to be a writer, none of what she had mattered. What really mattered? Writing. Plain and simple, honest to God, sitting in front of her computer, writing. Today, she has four completed Young Adult novels.

I mentally stomped on the intimidation their perfection brought into my mind and said, “Excuse me.”

The group froze, startled by my words. The girls had their brows raised and the boys stopped mid-speech, mouths agape. They stared at me with eyes the shade of onyx stones.

I smiled and gave them a little wave.

The boy a step ahead of the rest recovered first. His stunning features went from shocked surprise to intense interest. He reminded me of a hawk eyeing its prey. I gulped.

“A Day Student,” he said, his eyes insolent and excited.

Something about the way he said “Day Student” made my stomach flip. “Excuse me?”

They snickered. The boys looked at each other while the girls continued to stare, muffling their laughter by delicate hands. I seemed to be the butt of some joke.

“You broke the rule.” The boy’s grin turned predatory.

The students formed a loose semi-circle in front of me. My gaze darted from face to face. Hunger filled their eyes. The image of lions about to chase down a gazelle came to mind. I mentally shook my head. I was in the mountains not the Serengeti for crying out loud.

I took a small step back and cleared my throat. “Can any of you give me a ride back to the dorms?”

The boy wagged his forefinger like a metronome. “Ah, that’s unfortunate for you.”

One of the girls pinched the bridge of her nose. “Eli, you can’t possibly—”

“It’s forbidden, Eli,” another boy interrupted, pronouncing the word “forbidden” like a curse.

The nervous murmur at the pit of my stomach grew louder. Six against one. Not good odds. Instinct told me to cut my losses and run. Bad enough I faced expulsion, now it seemed like weird, beautiful people who’d suddenly appeared on campus wanted to beat me up. No, scratch that. Judging from the way they studied me, beating me up wouldn’t satisfy them. Something more primal prowled behind their looks.

I definitely wasn’t going down without a fight. Years of self-defense and hand-to-hand combat classes had me prepared. While other children from rich and important families got bodyguards, I got defense training. But I think my father meant for my skills to go up against potential kidnappers, not against other students who may or may not be crazy. Oh God! Maybe I stepped into a parallel universe or something when I reentered Barinkoff.

“None of the students are supposed to be on campus,” I said. Then, realizing my mistake, I added, “Okay, I know I’m not supposed to be here either. If one of you gives me a ride back to the dorms, I won’t say anything about all this. Let’s pretend this never happened. I didn’t see you, you didn’t see me.”

“We’re not ordinary students,” Eli answered. “We’re the Night Students.”

He’d said “Night Students” like the words were capitalized. I didn’t know Barinkoff held classes at night. What was going on here?

Eli smiled with just one side of his mouth and said to the group, “She’s right, no one will have to know. We’re the only ones here. And it’s been so long, don’t you agree?”

The rest of them nodded reluctantly.

“What’s been so long?” I challenged. I fisted my hands, ready to put them up if any of them so much as twitched my way.

“Since the taste of real flesh passed through my lips,” Eli said. He came forward and took a whiff of me then laughed when I cringed.

“Flesh.” Yep, parallel universe.

“Yes,” he said. “And yours smells so fresh.”

Someone grabbed my shoulders from behind and yanked me back before I could wrap my mind around the meaning behind Eli’s words. In a blink, I found myself behind someone tall. Someone really tall. And quite broad. And very male.

I realized he wore the same clothes Eli and the other boys did. Not good. He was one of them. Although… I cocked my head, raking my gaze over him. He seemed born to wear the uniform, like he was the pattern everyone else was cut from. My eyes wandered to long, layered, blue-black hair tied at the nape by a silk ribbon. Even in dim light, his hair possessed a sheen akin to mercury.

I looked down. The boy’s long fingers were wrapped around my wrist like a cuff. His fevered touch felt hotter than human standards, hot enough to make me sweat like I was standing beside a radiator but not hot enough to burn.

“I must be mistaken, Eli,” the boy who held my arm said in a monotone. “Correct me. Did I hear you say you wanted to taste the flesh of this girl?”

A hush descended on us. It had the hairs at the back of my neck rising. How was it possible for the atmosphere to switch from threatening to dangerous? Unable to help myself, I peeked around the new guy’s bulk. Eli and his friends bowed. They all had their right hands on their chests.

“Demitri, I’m sure you misheard me,” Eli said.

So the guy standing between me and the person who said he’d wanted to taste me was named Demitri. I like the sound of his name. Demitri. So strong, yet rolls off the tongue. Definite yum factor.

“So, you imply I made a mistake?” Demitri demanded.

“No!” Eli lifted his gaze. “I did no such thing. I simply wanted to show the girl the consequences of breaking curfew.”

“Hey!” I yelled. “Don’t talk about me like I’m not here!”

Demitri ignored my protest and continued to address Eli. “So, you threatened to taste her flesh.” His fingers tightened their grip around my wrist. “In the interest of investigating this matter further, I invoke the Silence.”

All six students gasped, passing surprised glances at one another.

Before I could ask about what was going on, Demitri yanked me down the hall toward the library. But why there? Oh, maybe we were getting my things. No, wait, he couldn’t have known about that. Everything was too confusing now.

Eli and the others didn’t try to stop us when we passed them. Demitri’s cold command must have carried power. Handsome and powerful, never a bad combination on a guy.

We reached the heavy double doors in seconds. He jerked one open effortlessly. I’d needed all my strength just to squeeze through that same door earlier. To him, the thick wood might as well have been cardboard. I raised an eyebrow and mentally listed the benefits of going to gym class.

“Why are we here?” I asked after my curiosity overpowered my worry. I’d almost forgotten how frightened I’d been right before Demitri showed up. I wasn’t above accepting help from strangers. Especially from gorgeous dark-haired strangers with hot hands and wide shoulders.

Demitri kept going, tugging me along, snaking his way deeper into the library. I had to take two steps for every stride his legs made. I tried to stay directly behind him, praying we didn’t slam into anything.

He stopped suddenly and I collided with him. It felt like slamming into a wall.
“Hey,” I said, momentarily stunned. “A little warning would be nice!”

He faced me, and I gasped. His eyes resembled a starless night, deep and endless. Their intensity drilled through me without pity, seeming to expose all my secrets. I felt naked and flustered beneath his gaze.
“You could have died back there,” he warned.

A lump of panic rebuilt itself in my throat.

Liz Reinhardt author of Forgiving Trinity Guest Post, Giveaway & Blog Tour

Jennifer was kind enough to ask my about my teenage shenanigans! First of all, let’s raise a toast to the glorious beauty of that word: shenanigans! Doesn’t that make you want to get into trouble?!

Growing up, I was a lanky kid with bad vision, a book addiction, and an overbearing mother who had, herself, gotten into so many shenanigans she knew every trick in the Shenanigan Handbook! Every single trick.

So I got away with NOTHING! Not a sneak out. Not a goosey night. Not a tiny tad of criminal mischief. Nothing at all.

You know how they say girls tend to fall in love with guys like their fathers? Well, I fell in love with a boy after my mother’s rebellious, trouble-making heart. I met him at the tail-end of the Reign of Terror he and his cousins let loose on our county. And my honors-classes-taking, hard-working, college girl heart was intrigued.

Intrigued by the tattoos, one completed when he was only sixteen and lied to the artist to get it done.

Intrigued by a tongue ring so large and clunky it chipped some of his teeth (and was also gotten illegally and resulted in an infected tongue).

Intrigued by a big, roaring truck with tires too high for any reasonable person to need, a smoking habit he decided to kick because I had a hard time breathing around him when he did it, and the kind of crazy camaraderie with bands of miscreant boys and men that happens in movies like The Boondock Saints and Social Distortion songs and inspires characters like Bender from The Breakfast Club.

Frank, my then-boyfriend-now-husband, had no curfew and hadn’t for years. He slept at any number of houses and crash pads, disappeared for weekends without letting his parents know, and kissed me until I agreed to join in with his fun. Kind of agreed.

One date in particular exposed me to the life of an aging Shenanigan-doer. See, in youth, things like lighting half the forest on fire, having a Copperhead bite the toe of your boot while you’re waiting to ambush some rival group of kids, or mouthing off to adults (including principles, police officers, and various authority figures) is all fun. Or seems fun.

Factor in a girlfriend with a raging conscience and a sense of proper human conduct, and even the baddest bad boy starts to squirm when various lifted trucks and jeeps start pulling into one-of-a-dozen’s aunts’ driveways minutes before a romantic dinner/movie date.

“What are your cousins and brothers doing here?” I asked, so ready to eat sushi and snuggle down for a good zombie flick but feeling, with a sinking dread, that I was going to have to forgo my California rolls and undead.

Frank shifted his eyes and took my hand, kissing my knuckles in that way he knew melted my heart. “Look, can you wait here for a few minutes? I’ll be back soon, alright? Don’t come out!”

Before I could agree or disagree, he had run to the front yard, crossed his arms over his chest, and was waiting while his cousin dragged his brother out of a truck and and over to Frank. His cousin gesticulated wildly, his motions jerky with excitement and, it looked like, rage. Frank kept glancing up at the window where I was waiting in his room, sure our date was over.

I watched girls pull out lawnchairs and offer them to Frank’s various male relatives, then sit, demure and cross-legged at their feet. There was a lot of stalking, pacing, phone calling, shouting, waving of arms, and clapping of backs.

It was a yard of shenanigan-experts preparing for a history-making shenanigan.

Frank finally came back to the room. “Don’t be mad,” he preambled, his hands up and his eyes wide. “I gotta stay here for a while.”

I got exactly one night a week off from the grind of college and work, and I wanted a romantic date!

“Am I allowed to ask why, or should I get you a lawnchair and a beer and sit at your feet until you send me to fetch something else?” I sneered.

“What?! No!” He gathered me up in his arms and held me close. “No. I want to be with you. Trust me. You have no idea. But my brother…”

“What? What happened?” I demanded, trying not to get woozy over the delicious smell of his aftershave.

“He got into it with this guy, and the guy is going to beat him up.”

I could tell from the tight set of his lips that this was the highly edited version of the story. “Okay. Call the police.”

He kissed me, an obvious attempt to divert my attention. Awesome. Wonderful. Not working. I turned my head away and he sighed. “Can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because my brother bashed his taillights in.”

“WHAT?!”

“The guy talked smack to him. He had to.”

“Uh, no. No one has to smash anyone’s headlights in.”

“Taillights,” Frank corrected before he could stop himself.

“So, what are you going to do? Beat him up?”

“Yeah.” Frank looked relieved. Finally, I had seen the light!

“You’re going to wait for this guy to come here, then gang up on him and beat him up because he said something that made your brother decide to bash his taillights in?” I stared at Frank. He smiled.

“YES!” He leaned in to kiss me.

“Take me home, now,” I demanded.

Franks entire face fell. He argued. He cajoled. He begged, but it fell on deaf ears.

“Take me to dinner, or take me home. But I’m not sitting here and watching you idiots brawl, and I’m not waiting for the cops to come and arrest all of you for it.”

I couldn’t believe I was in this situation! I had waited my entire life to see shenanigans close up, and here I was, right in the thick of a big, broiling one, and I was calling uncle.

“Seriously?” Frank tested.

I gave him the face that communicated just how dead-set serious I was.

“Okay. Get your purse,” he said, and my eyes stung, because I knew I’d have to sit in my room alone all night. “Let’s go get some gross raw fish.”

“We’re going out?” I was shocked.

“I’m not choosing a backyard brawl over you,” he said.

“Frontyard,” I corrected. Then I kissed him. And thus began the bitter end of Frank’s long, twisted shenanigan history. All for a girl who wanted to see it fisthand, and wound up with no taste for it.

Well. Unless she was writing a book and needed knowledge about some kind of illicit/illegal activity. Frank makes an excellent fictional shenanigan source!

Forgiving Trinity

At seventeen, Trinity McCabe has already made enough mistakes to fill a lifetime. Especially the one where she got high, drove a car, and almost killed a dog. And then let her friend Aidan take the blame.

She’s clean now and desperate to fix the messes she’s made, but first she’s going to have to get out of her pajamas.

As Trinity struggles to stop sleepwalking through life, she faces the painful, tingling sensation of waking up. It’s sometimes embarrassing (she really didn’t want to have lunch with Aidan’s mom), sometimes terrifying (group therapy is beyond intimidating), and sometimes, amazingly enough, pretty romantic (who’d have though Aidan would be such a great kisser?)

Deadly Pleasures by Mary Firmin Blog Tour

Deadly PleasuresMegan Riley has bigger things to worry about than the fact that her neighbor has just been found dead.

Her engagement has just ended, and she is once again on a quest to find Mr. Right-or at least Mr. Right Now. Tired of emotional ties and ready for a new adventure, Megan and her three best friends make a fateful decision. They hire hunky stripper Michael Harrington as their timeshare boytoy-unaware he is the prime suspect in a series of gruesome murders. Suddenly, they find themselves involved in a complicated murder investigation led by a handsome detective who is focused only on finding the twisted serial killer before he strikes again. But who will be the next to die? Megan, the hardworking real estate agent; newly divorced Kathleen; Alex, married to a wealthy businessman; or Rachel, the spurned wife of a hot Hollywood screenwriter?

Following her own investigation, Megan takes a wild ride through L.A.'s bondage parlors, hidden sex clubs, and the extravagant lifestyles of the rich and famous; soon she discovers that her quest for adventure has abruptly transformed into a dangerous game of life and death.

My Thoughs:
Disclaimer: I was very hesitant about reading Deadly Pleasures. The title and cover are a little deceiving – I was concerned because I thought it would  have tons of sex in it but was told not to worry about it by a friend. She was right, there is one sex scene and truthfully, the YA books I have read are much more detailed than the short non-descript scene Deadly Pleasures has. However, there is sexual talk and descriptive crime scenes that I had a hard time with. I also discovered how naive I am.

Deadly Pleasures is my first adventure in the literary world of Murder Mystery. It starts out with a group of women that are fed up and discouraged by cheating husbands and the different standards for the two genders. They wonder why it seems ok for men to have a little something on the side but women can’t?

When one of the men in this rich circle of friends dies in a very socially awkward way the group of yacht club yuppies are dragged into the middle of a crazy serial killer mystery. Megan is terrified of the murders that seem to be happening close to her home. Through a little detective work she discovers that her group of friends has secrets that she wishes she hadn’t discovered.

The good: Matt Donavon is a rare gem. This character kept me glued to the second half of the book. Megan and Matt’s relationship is the real meat and potatoes of the story. For me Mary Firmin’s writing flows smoothly when these two are together, you cannot help but love these characters and the sincerity they both have.

The Bad: I hated the women, I hated the cat calling, cougar – we give women a bad name – if you pay somebody enough they’ll do you want women. There were too many of them. I really could not keep track of them all or the spouses or who was divorced who slept with whom. I honestly couldn’t figure out how someone like Megan was friends with them, she seemed like the only semi wholesome gal of the group.

The Ugly: Monsters. By looking at my blog design you can tell I like them. But Deadly pleasures had monsters of a different sort in it. Real ones, monsters that exist in our world and make me want to carry a weapon with me at all times. I’m glad that the monster in Deadly Pleasure was one that had a specific type of prey – my complete opposite – or I would have been sleeping with the lights on.

Who would I recommend Deadly Pleasures to? People that love crime, murder mysteries and drama. Deadly Pleasures actually reminded me a lot of a soap opera, a hot mess that you can’t help but get sucked into.

My rating: I remember looking at my kindle and thinking “Oh my goodness I’m only 37% done? I cannot force myself to finish this book.” But it came as a recommendation from someone that I trust and she loved it so I carried on. The reason I had a hard time was because I could not relate to the characters at all. There were to many of them a group of five friends and five cheating dirt bag men that had no humanity. The story also seemed to jump around and I had a hard time keeping track of who was narrating. For the first half of the book I would give Deadly Pleasures a 3 skull review.

For the second half of Deadly Pleasures I would give it a 4 skull rating. It’s intense, the narration is strictly from Megan and Matt and easy to follow. As I said before I think this is where Mary Firmin’s writing truly shines. The second half of the book is mysterious and has a shocking ending.

So I give Deadly Pleasures 3.5 Skulls. This means if you’re a fan of Murder Mystery you would really enjoy this book. If you are just trying out this genre, check it out from the library – like me you’ll be surprised at the ending. And that is always a treat!
