Several years ago I found myself a newly stay at home mom with the mad desire to escape the boring repetition of feeding children, changing diapers, feeding children, naps, feeding, diapers.... you get the idea.
I had been reading quite a bit at the time and my small libraries YA selection was just not keeping up with my literary demands. One book that I had ached to read had an enormous waiting list. It was Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater. Impatience won and I decided that it was time to splurge and actually buy a book. So off to my local book store I went.
I remember sitting in my car holding Shiver like it was a treasure. Entranced with the beauty of the cover I traced my fingers over the intricate design of leaves and wolf. I couldn't wait to read it, so I started reading in the parking lot.
I was hooked. Maggie's writing is poetic for me. I love the descriptions and wonderfully magic worlds she has created for us the reader. One line Maggie wrote in Ballad made me close my eyes and breathe deep. It felt real because it was vivid and a memory I have had many times before but had never tried to describe. My words would never create what Maggie can.
“The afternoon was all scudding clouds and woodsmoke-scented wind and a brilliant blue sky so huge it closed the hill in its own cerulean bubble.” Ballad, page 90
Even after two years that line still moves me. In my Linger book review I wrote:
Reading Ms. Stiefvater's books is like a song – the music is a tune my mind and heart knows because I have experienced loss, discovery, sorrow, disappointment, hope, compassion, and love. Sam and Grace allow me to feel the newness of these emotions as the innocence of young adulthood blossoms into a deeper understanding of life, maturity and each other. The music and song that Ms. Stiefvater composes through her writing is just as unique to my soul as it is to Sam and Grace’s – pure and hopeful.
Now that I have had the pleasure of reading more novels of Maggie Stievfater and I still feel the same way each and every time I read her work.
After starting My Life With Books and keeping track of author signings in the area, I knew one of the
authors I wished would come to Utah is Maggie. It has been a dream for the last two year to meet her and pick her brain. I've wondered if she speaks like she writes. Will she drive Loki, her car, all the way out here? Can I get my picture taken with Maggie and Loki?
Well guess what? Finally it's my turn to meet her this Tuesday at The Kings English Bookshop in Salt Lake City. I have the honor of meeting with her before the event with several other book bloggers to ask questions and learn more about her. My mind is both spewing questions and drawing a blank at the same time.
So my questions for you are:
What is your favorite Maggie Stiefvater book? (For my next contest - an autographed copy of course)
And
If you could ask Maggie one question what would it be?
If I use your question you'll get a prize! You will win either a book or some special swag from the Raven Boys tour.
****
The Kings English Bookshop in Salt Lake City Utah will be hosting Maggie Stiefvater for The Raven Boys tour.
Maggie will read from and sign her latest young adult novel, The Raven Boys. After the acclaimed Shiver trilogy and The Scorpio Races, she brings us a new series where the inevitability of death and the nature of love lead us through an entirely new world.
The book signing will be at The Kings English Bookshop Tuesday, October 9, 7 p.m.
If you cannot make it to the event you can call and order your own personalized autographed copy of any of Maggie's books. The Kings English does ship books if you are out of the area. The process is so easy and I have personally taken advantage of this service many times.
