Trapped in a hidden fortress tucked between towering mountains and a frozen sea, Solveig, along with her brother the crown prince, their older sister, and an army of restless warriors, anxiously awaits news of her father's victory at battle. But as winter stretches on, and the unending ice refuses to break, terrible acts of treachery soon make it clear that a traitor lurks in their midst. A malevolent air begins to seep through the fortress walls, and a smothering claustrophobia slowly turns these prisoners of winter against one another.
Those charged with protecting the king's children are all suspect, and the siblings must choose their allies wisely. But who can be trusted so far from their father's watchful eye? Can Solveig and her siblings survive the long winter months and expose the traitor before he succeeds in destroying a kingdom?

The Clockwork Three
Three ordinary children are brought together by extraordinary events. . .

Hannah is a soft-hearted, strong-willed girl from the tenements, who supports her family as a hotel maid when tragedy strikes and her father can no longer work. She learns about a hidden treasure, which she knows will save her family -- if she can find it.
And Frederick, the talented and intense clockmaker's apprentice, seeks to learn the truth about his mother while trying to forget the nightmares of the orphanage where she left him. He is determined to build an automaton and enter the clockmakers' guild -- if only he can create a working head.

What I'm Wishing For - Sacrificial Magic

When Chess Putnam is ordered by an infamous crime boss—who also happens to be her drug dealer—to use her powers as a witch to solve a grisly murder involving dark magic, she knows she must rise to the challenge. Adding to the intensity: Chess’s boyfriend, Terrible, doesn’t trust her, and Lex, the son of a rival crime lord, is trying to reignite the sparks between him and Chess.

Plus there’s the little matter of Chess’s real job as a ghost hunter for the Church of Real Truth, investigating reports of a haunting at a school in the heart of Downside. Someone seems to be taking a crash course in summoning the dead—and if Chess doesn’t watch her back, she may soon be joining their ranks.

As Chess is drawn into a shadowy world of twisted secrets and dark violence, it soon becomes clear that she’s not going to emerge from its depths without making the ultimate sacrifice.

Sacrificial Magic will be released by Del Rey Books on March 27, 2012.

The Downsider series or Chess Putnam as its been called is surprisingly one of my favorite series. Its not a typical read for me because its a darker, gritty and sexier book than I usually read. I was surprised when Stacia Kane sucked me into the world of Triumph City and got me addicted to the characters snarky and cynical attitudes. Sacrificial Magic is the number one pre order on my list for 2012.

I am missing Terrible and Chess, maybe I should head back to my Top Ten Tuesday list and reread the series! :-D

ARC Review - Indelible by Lani Woodland

Indelible by Lani Woodland
from Pendrell Publishing September 27, 2011

Yara is beginning to understand just how much her life will change now that her Waker abilities have emerged. She has come to terms with the fact that seeing ghosts is part of her life, but she isn’t ready to let being a Waker dictate her choices. All she wants is a ghost-free senior year with her boyfriend, Brent, and her best friend, Cherie. But Yara soon discovers that there are more dark secrets in her school’s history than just the curse she broke. While an angry ghost makes Yara question everything she thought she knew about spirits, she and Brent learn that there are long reaching consequences to last year’s adventures. As new enemies emerge and old ghosts resurface, Yara finds herself in the center of another deadly mystery, and this time she has to contend with the living as well as the dead.

My Thoughts:

Indelible starts off with a new school year for Yara. She has been away from her friends for the summer in Brazil training with Vovo on how to be a good Waker. Yara and her friends are excited to reunite and resume a normal school year. Or so they thought....

Yara's abilities haunt her wherever she goes. She is learning to cope with the realization that she will see and deal with ghost in every aspect of her life. She also has unique abilities that are enhancing and disturbing her Waker skills. Her relationship with Brent is even better in this book, not only because we get to see them interact as a couple but because they function much more realistically - its not all roses anymore.
Unfortunately for Yara, she is learning that there are people in both of her worlds (physical and spiritual) that would take advantage of her and her skills. As Yara develops her Waker skills she becomes more confident and afraid of her own power. Vovo plays a bigger part in this book and she is a character that I really enjoy reading about. I can imagine that Yara will someday be much like her Vovo.

I liked that we got to see more of Cherie and Steve in Indelible. They play a larger roll in the plot and become a dependable support group for both Yara and Brent. There are new characters introduced that throw in an unexpected twist on the story. I hope we get to see more of them in the next book.

The first quarter of Indelible isn't as exciting as Intrinsical and I was worried that I was going to be disappointed. Then BAM! I couldn't put it down! I won't say anything else about the sudden excitement for fear of spoilers. Just trust me on this one - as hard as it is to believe, Indelible trumps Intrinsical.

What I liked about Intrinsical is that Yara is no longer fighting who she is. With the help of friends and family she is growing into a strong young woman who stands firm in her beliefs, thinks things through before acting and is learning to serve the unseen selflessly. I for one can't get enough of The Yara Silva Trilogy.

And the ending freaking rocked. (I actually giggled with happy anticipation!)

Indelible will be released in e format on September 27, 2011. The publishing date for print copies has been moved back to October. Here is what Pendrell Publishing had to say:

"Due to a quality issue with the printing of Indelible, the release date has been pushed back until October. The e-book will still be available through Amazon and Smashwords on Sep 27th. For those who are planning to attend the Indelible launch party, a special paper back edition of Indelible will be on sale sale that day only. Those in attendance will be able to pre-order the hardcover edition of Indelible, when released, for a discounted price through Pendrell Publishing.

We apologize for the inconvenience and hope that our readers understand that we couln't justify releasing a lesser quality product."

You can learn more about Lani on her website, follow her on twitter, facebook and view Indelible on Goodreads. You can pre order Indelible from Barnes and Noble, Amazon and Pendrell Publishing.

Thank you to Pendrell Publishing for providing me with this ARC of Indelible in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Intrinsical by Lani Woodland {Book Review}

Intrinsical
The Yara Silva Trilogy by Lani Woodland

Sixteen-year-old Yara Silva has always known that ghosts walk alongside the living. Her grandma, like the other females in her family, is a Waker, someone who can see and communicate with ghosts. Yara grew up watching her grandmother taunted and scorned for this unusual ability and doesn't want that to be her future. She has been dreading the day when she too would see ghosts, and is relieved that the usually dominant Waker gene seems to have skipped her, letting her live a normal teenage life. However, all that changes for Yara on her first day at her elite boarding school when she discovers the gene was only lying dormant. She witnesses a dark mist attack Brent, a handsome fellow student, and rushes to his rescue. Her act of heroism draws the mist's attention, and the dark spirit begins stalking her. Yara finds herself entrenched in a sixty-year-old curse that haunts the school, threatening not only her life, but the lives of her closest friends as well. Yara soon realizes that the past she was trying to put behind her isn't going to go quietly

My Thoughts:
It seems there are a lot of paranormal books where a young girl is sent to private school and discovers she has supernatural abilities. For these reasons you would think that the story line of Intrinsical would be overdone and boring right? WRONG! On page one I realized that Lani Woodland wrote a wonderful story that sets itself apart from most YA paranormal books.

I read the first paragraph of  Intrinsical and stopped, looked at the cover and description thinking "this is a young adult book"? I reread the first paragraph and surmised that Intrinsical is not a dumb downed YA book. It's not that the language was Lord of the Rings -like but it also wasn't valley girl speak. At this point I knew I would like Intrinsical - knowing that it would be a paranormal read that also required more mind power if you will. (Bigger more descriptive words and a world I am not familiar with meant paying more attention to the story)

Lani Woodlands vivid imagery has me recalling even the tiniest detail. She creates a world that is absolutely realistic while throwing in a completely paranormal world too. While reading I was lost in the story forgetting about time and other responsibilities that needed my attention.

What Intrinsical does lack is a love triangle - and for that I am grateful. There is however a beautiful love story unlike any I have read before. I liked that the relationship Yara forms with her friend Brent. It is a strong friendship filled with trust, faith, communication and honesty - not physical contact. Proving that people can have relationships without smoochies.

If I were a teen girl Brent would be my book crush. He is adorable and everything a girl wants (and deserves) in a boy.

Intrinsical is a book that I would recommend for any young adult and adult reader that enjoys romance and some paranormal elements. There is NO swearing nor is there any sex in Intrinsical. There is some talk of suicide and murder - but both topics lack details. What I also liked and is a rarity in YA novels is that Yara has a close family with traditional family values.

Would I buy Intrinsical? Yes, it has been added to the for "when Morgan is a teen" bookshelf.  I also think it would be a fun mother daughter read.

Its My Birthday - my present - A BLOG MAKEOVER BY PARAJUNKEE DESIGNS

Today is my birthday and to celebrate I got an awesome blog make-over from Parajunkee Designs.

Wanna know my favorite part of it? The zombies in the window and the picture of the little kid on the bookshelf. I love the details and THE COLORS!

Often times you will find me reading a book and cooking dinner at the same time. I love the paranormal so vacuuming with a monster/zombie vacuum while reading sounded fun.

My avatar is me and  my 1950's housewife lifestyle meeting paranormal/goth. No I do not dress like my avatar, LOL, I do however wear skull and crossbones stockings to church. (And I am dying to get these zombie stomper shoes from iron fist. Aren't they awesome? Probably not for church though, huh?)

I hope you like the new look and I would love to know what ya'all think of the make-over. Thanks for helping me celebrate my birthday! (And not minding that I took a week off from blogging to relax - cuz I am feeling a year older now ;-D)

Thanks for stopping by!

Cover Reveal: Obsidian by Jennifer Armentrout

Obsidian by Jennifer Armentrout
release date 12/6/11
Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, outhouses, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring. Until I spotted my hot neighbor with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something…unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marked me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and the mark he left on me has me lit up like Las Vegas strip to the bad guys. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades. If I don't kill him first, that is.

And then things got really bad…

Doesn't Obsidian sound exciting? And the cover is beautiful! Thanks Jennifer for the opportunity to post the Obsidian cover reveal on My Life With Books. I can't wait to read it!

“Many of us primarily read one genre of books, with others sprinkled in. If authors stopped writing that genre, what genre would you start reading? Or would you give up reading completely if you couldn’t read that genre anymore?”

Answer:
I would find something else to read. I actually read a lot more books than I post on my blog. A fave of mine that is not related to anything paranormal (my preferred genre) Is the Alchemist by Paulo Cohelo. I think every person should read it. It is very inspiring.

Ashes
It could happen tomorrow . . .
An electromagnetic pulse flashes across the sky, destroying every electronic device, wiping out every computerized system, and killing billions.

Alex hiked into the woods to say good-bye to her dead parents and her personal demons. Now desperate to find out what happened after the pulse crushes her to the ground, Alex meets up with Tom—a young soldier—and Ellie, a girl whose grandfather was killed by the EMP.
For this improvised family and the others who are spared, it’s now a question of who can be trusted and who is no longer human.
Author Ilsa J. Bick crafts a terrifying and thrilling novel about a world that could be ours at any moment, where those left standing must learn what it means not just to survive, but to live amidst the devastation

Jennifer Nielsen will be having a launch party at The Kings English Bookshop September 17 @ 7:00 PM, for her new release Elliot and the Pixie Pot. The second book in her middle grade series. You can learn more about Jennifer Nielsen and her books on her website.

Elliot and the Goblin War
WARNING: As of today, there are only 7 CHILDREN who have ever read this book and lived to tell about it. 95 CHILDREN successfully read the first chapter, but upon beginning chapter 2, they started BLABBERING in some language known only as "flibberish." 38 CHILDREN made it halfway through this wretched book before they began SUCKING THEIR THUMBS THROUGH THEIR NOSES.
If you're VERY BRAVE, perhaps you are willing to TAKE YOUR CHANCES. Be sure that you have told your family who gets your favorite toys if you DO NOT SURVIVE this book. Read it now, IF YOU DARE. But don't say you haven't been warned, for this is the story that unfolds the MYSTERIES OF THE UNDERWORLD

Elliot and the Pixie Plot
An entire floor of St. Phobics Hospital for Really Scared Children has been set aside just for readers of this book. You may wish to take a minute before you start reading and reserve yourself a bed there.
As you read, you may begin to understand myctophobia (mic-tofo- be-a), or the fear of darkness. However, do not expect this book to help you with arachibutyrophobia (a-rak-i-something-be-a), the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth.
If you can't get yourself to St. Phobics, then get every lamp, flashlight, and lantern you can find and drag them into your bedroom. Turn them all on. You'll need them until you're certain there is nothing lurking in the dark.
At least, that's what Elliot wishes he had done.

~ What I'm Reading & L♥ving ~

Indelible by Lani Woodland

Released by Pendrell Publishing September 27, 2011

Sixteen-year-old Yara Silva has always known that ghosts walk alongside the living. Her grandma, like the other females in her family, is a Waker, someone who can see and communicate with ghosts. Yara grew up watching her grandmother taunted and scorned for this unusual ability and doesn t want that to be her future. Her act of heroism draws the mist s attention, and the dark spirit begins stalking her. Yara finds herself entrenched in a sixty-year-old curse that haunts the school, threatening not only her life, but the lives of her closest friends as well. Yara soon realizes that the past she was trying to put behind her isn't going to go quietly. .

What I'm Wishing For - The Calling

The Calling by Kelley Armstrong
Released by HarperTeen April 2012

The CallingMaya Delaney’s paw-print birthmark is the sign of what she truly is—a skin-walker. She can run faster, climb higher, and see better than nearly anyone else. Experiencing intense connections with the animals that roam the woods outside her home, Maya knows it’s only a matter of time before she’s able to Shift and become one of them. And she believes there may be others in her small town with surprising talents.

Now, Maya and her friends have been forced to flee from their homes during a forest fire they suspect was deliberately set. Then they’re kidnapped, and after a chilling helicopter crash, they find themselves in the Vancouver Island wilderness with nothing but their extraordinary abilities to help them get back home. Plentiful action and romance in this second installment in the Darkness Rising series will keep readers enthralled to the last page.

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Happy Wednesday

Over Labor Day weekend we went camping for 5 days. No TV, phone or Internet (with t he exception of driving one hour, one way, off the mountain to check my upcoming blog design by PARAJUNKEE, yes its awesome)

I took 15 books with me and after lugging them around have decided e readers aren't all that bad of an idea LOL. How many did I read? Only three! I was too busy roasting marshmallows and four wheeling to read. Being outdoors is completely refreshing for me, I feel grounded and peaceful when I have been in the great outdoors.

BUT its taking me a few days to get caught up with everything including the mount Everest of laundry.

Too bad my camping is nothing like Harry Potter's.

Happy Wednesday and happy reading. ♥
